The book starts off in April 28 1992 with a man named Jim Gallien who is driving through Alaska. He spots a "boy" named Chris McCandless who is actually 24 years old and claims to be Alex McCandless and to have come from South Dakota. Jim drives Alex to the edge of Denali National Park and on the way they discuss the items that Alex should have. Seeing that Alex doesn't have much Jim offers to help him by giving him boots and driving Alex to the closest town to buy better cothing but Alex declines. In the next chapter it starts off with a broken down bus in Denali National Park. Three men: Thompson, Samel, and Swanson find Chris's body in the bus. Samel is the one who actually discovers him. Unfortunately they don't have room on their ATVs to carry him out of the forest, but another man named Butch Killian alerts the authorities. The next day a police helicopter removdes the body, five rolls of exposed film, the SOS note on the bus door written by Chris, and a diary with 113 entries. An autopsy shows that Chris starved to death. In the third chapter you meet Wayne Westerberg when he picks up Alex while he is hitchhiking and the weather was bad. Alex did not have the right equipment, so Westerberg suggested that McCandless stay with him a while then left. Alex ended up going back a few weeks later and started working for Westerberg, but then Alex had to leave because Westerberg got arrested. . The reader also finds out that Chris is actually from Virginia and he graduated from Emory College. Soon after he leaves to go West without anyone knowing. In the fourth chapter it starts off October 1990 about three months after McCandless left Atlanta. Chris's car was found by a service ranger named Bud Walsh. Walsh couldn't trace the car to Chris however because Chris had taken off the the license plate and a few other things from the car and burried them. Chris went out west and worked on Crazy Ernie's Farm but soon left because he did not get paid. He then meets Jan Burres and her boyfriend Bob he keeps in touch with them through postcard. Chris ends up getting a ticket for hitchiking which his parents find out about and hire a private investigator Kalitka who finds out that Chris donated all his money to charity. In chapter five it begins May of 1991. Chris has stopped writing in his journal and his camera no longer works but Kraukaur finds out that Chris spent two months in Bullhead City working at McDonalds. He got a bank account and even introduced himself by his real name.In Arizona, Chris met a man named Charlie, who showed him a trailer he could live in for a while. McCandless soon left Arizona and went to live again with Jan and Bob at Niland, referred to by the locals as “the Slabs.” Jan says that even though Alex liked to keep to himself, he had a really good time when he was around people. He told anyone that would listen that he planned to visit Alaska. When Alex was leaving, Jan tried to get him to take some things with him--after he had gone, she found most of the things she had given him left behind. These include: swiss army knives and somebelt knives.
